Stuck On You? 6 Reasons Why Your CH Cat May Be Extra Clingy
Let’s face it. You very well may have a clingy CH cat.
In fact, a few months ago 75% of readers said their CH cats *love* being close to them. But as some of us know, our cats’ love can be a clingy, dependent type of love.

As much as we all may list our kitties’ clingy tendencies as a favorite characteristic, sometimes it can be a bit much. And that’s just the problem – clingy cats don’t understand that you really do need a few uninterrupted minutes to send those work emails, and they can’t comprehend that sometimes it’s easier to walk through the hallway with a full laundry basket without tripping over a small, furry body.
I must admit that I give in, too. As I type this, I’m sitting on my floor. Ellie’s to the left of me, watching as each letter pops on to the screen. You can only imagine what she does when the cursor moves around. But the reason I’m down here is totally because of her – she wouldn’t leave me alone otherwise.
Recently I’ve noticed several folks talking about this very topic on the Facebook CH Cats and Kittens page.
Sarah asked, “What do you guys do when your kitties meow and carry on? As soon as I sit at the computer, use the phone, or try to do much of anything, Sierra carries on and on, until I pick her up. She is so mommy attached.”
Similarly, Sharrylynn asked the group if our CH kitties demand bonding time like hers does. The overwhelming response? YES.
So why exactly do our cats become so clingy? Here are a few reasons:
- They’re nervous. Some of our CH kitties may feel vulnerable – insecure in their abilities to keep themselves safe. They may stick close to us, since they view us as protectors and providers.
- They’re insecure. Consider any changes that have occurred in your home recently. Have you moved the furniture around? Purchased a new rug that may have a strong odor to it? Changes like these can be intimidating to your cat.
- They’re new. Along those lines, cats who are new to a household, who haven’t found their place in the hierarchy yet, may also feel insecure and may latch on to you. As the provider, you’re seen as an excellent ally and a source of comfort.
- There are mommy issues. If your kitten was separated from her mother too early, it may have resulted in some bonding complications. Perhaps your kitten has problems with trust; perhaps you’re imprinted in her mind as her true mother. Either way, this can result in a very close bond.

They were rescued. Rescued cats may also have trust issues and be overly clingy. Their prior lives may have been difficult, which could have instilled many fears in them. Once they’ve found a forever home, they may worry that it’s temporary, or cling to you out of thankfulness.
- It’s a health issue. Sometimes if clingy behavior develops out of the blue, there could be something else going on behind the scenes. A radical behavior change, like extreme dependence, can signal medical problems. You may want to schedule a quick trip to your vet to rule out any serious issues.
Clingy or demanding?
If none of those possibilities sound like they apply to your cat, consider this: Is your cat clingy or is she simply demanding? (Side note, Miss Ellie definitely falls under the “demanding” category!)
Clingy or needy cats may need you for comfort or support. For example, a clingy cat may not eat unless you’re near. They may spend their day as your quiet shadow and cry out when they’re scared or need your help. Clingy or needy cats may have little confidence, whereas demanding cats may have too much confidence.
Demanding cats are likely “in-your-face,” pushy cats. They’re the ones that jump first into your lap. They’ll yell at you when it’s time for food. They’ve learned that being demanding, usually by meowing or dominating your space, can get them what they want. Often our cats end up training us, which can put us in a tough situation.
But don’t worry, there are ways you can improve your relationship with your cat, no matter if your cat is clingy or demanding. Stay tuned to find out more!
Do you have a clingy cat? Or is your cat more of the demanding type? Please share in the comments!
My CH kitty from Afghanistan (found by us at 8 mos. old) has always been a bit standoffish. Slowly, he’s getting more cuddly, not that he doesn’t crave affection. He just doesn’t give it back. We just moved back from three years in Jordan and he’s been extremely needy after some boarding and the plane trip. It’s kind of cute how he wants to sleep on the bed at night now and both our cats are a bit clingy at the moment. I can’t wait until they are back to normal! I have a friend living in our house so I can’t do tough love by keeping the bedroom door shut when they meow to come in at night. It would wake her up. I think they will eventually sleep downstairs as they used to in this house.
My cats all tend to be a bit demanding, but as a Siamese-lover, that kind of what I signed up for! Somehow I can tell a Siamese-esque kitten, whether he or she looks like a Siamese or not. Leia and Truffle both think if I’m on the phone I’m talking to them and get in my face and talk back…which is pretty confusing to the person on the phone…annoying sometimes? Yes, but who doesn’t love an insistent late night cuddle buddy??
Chairman can be a bit demanding. He dislikes it when i go out during the day. If he’s anxious he cries a lot, or if we have to throw out his mat because he peed on it again! He’s very attached to them, like a security blanket.
A couple of months ago we rescued a kitty a named him Crixus. He has adapted well to our home but his relationship with our dog (Phoebe) is a bit rocky. The real problem is that every morning , when we wake up and start moving around the house, Crixus starts meowing like crazy (extremely loud and not the normal meows you hear) for someone to let him inside the house (at night we close the doors so he doesn’t sneak around and disturb us). He wants to be pet and just be with someone. I find it weird since we haven’t encouraged that kind of behavior ever. The same thing sometimes happens at night when we come back from work. So far we’ve discovered that ignoring him is not working (we’ve been at it for a month. If anyone can give me a tip I’ll very thankful. Since we live in a big urban area, backyards and homes are next to each other, so even our neighbors can hear him. Thank you!
Your cat needs affection and interaction, and you consider that “weird behavior”? And you apparently think his need for love isn’t natural, but consider it some odd behavior that only occurs when specifically encouraged…?
And did I understand correctly that you lock the cat out of the house and night – and then you are surprised that he desperately wants to come in and be with you??
My tip for you is to rethink cat ownership. (Although you can’t be considered much of a cat owner given that you’re put off by the cat’s need for company and affection)
I’d say find the little guy a good home where he is truly loved and gets the affection he needs.
I agree with Allie. Cats very much need normal attention and care and affection, and it is not safe to leave him outdoors at night. There are predators around and he is afraid at night and needs to be indoors. You need to play, talk to, pet your cat. Ignoring him is cruel. The cats that we are talking about in this article are cats that cling for various reasons. Your cat sounds like a normal cat who is being denied normal care and is crying out for basic needs. Also, every cat I have ever had starts to meow or jump on my bed in the morning when they want breakfast. Mine start at about 8:00am. I just get up and feed them. Most cats do this. So give your cat affection, brush him, get him some toys to play with and for his safety do keep him inside. You will find he will respond and be a sweet cat.
yeah, let him be an indoor cat. You “rescued” him from what if you are going to leave him outside with the dangers of cat fights, cars, raccoons, dogs, harsh weather, etc.. Is he an ornament for your house or did you get him as a pet? If you rescued him so he could be a pet, why dont you train him how to sleep at night, pay some attention to him when you are home and dont ignore him.
Why would you lock your cat outside of the house in the first place ? I can understand his need for affection after being locked out for 8 hiurs or however long you sleep. I agree with the last comment that you need to get the kitty a good home that it deserves. Not even i with a needy cat wiuld lock mine outside of my BEDROOM.
to those people who are willing to bring home a cat that has been abused in ANY way, LISTEN to them, and find out WHAT they need from you. their needs MUST be put 1st until they feel safe and sound with you. they come to a new home at GREAT risk, to new humans that they hope will NOT abuse them, or NEGLECT them, or MISUNDERSTAND them. Cats are very EASY to understand, if you TRY to. Any being, regardless of whether they are human or animal, once abused, need EXTRA care, attention, and Love. They need to KNOW and FEEL that their NEW home is safe, and LOVING. If you CANNOT do this for them, do NOT bring them into your home. It is simply MORE abuse to them, if they do NOT receive the Love and attention they DESERVE. Every animal DESERVES 100% True Love and Care, in ALL ways….. human beings MUST learn this lesson, if they are to help the animal kingdom heal from the abuse of previous “carers”. they are exquisite beings who only ask for Love and Shelter….. what MORE needs to be understood ????? It is so repulsive to listen to human beings and their narcissistic attitude, regarding animals. Animals Needs must be put 1st… and NOT human needs… when will human beings actually truly LOVE animals and put their needs first, ensuring that they have a safe and loving home….. ?????? I hope one day, human beings will realize the precious GIFT they have been given to be ALLOWED to Bring an animal into their home, that is asking only for shelter, food and Love….. do NOT take any animal for granted, and neglect them. One day, they will NOT be there….. and if you have mistreated them in ANY way, due to neglect and misunderstanding, you will feel this when they are gone… VERY much so.
I’ve been around cats since I was a toddler, seems like cats were always around and it was all good. I love cats and have taken the “cat” side in many a cat vs. dog which is the uberpet (answer: cats) all my life. One thing I love about cats, the cats I’ve always had anyway, is their independence. They’re into you, sure, but it’s like the affection you get from a really cool roomate. You hang out, have dinner together once in a while, and then DO YOU OWN THING. If I wanted clingy, I’d buy a dog. It’s the reason I don’t have one. When did this change? When I brought home a feral cat. The behavior is what is described here: following me, yelling for food or attention, permanently attached to my lap like in it the moment I sit down. She sits and just watches me, I mean, just sits there. It’s so un-cat-like that I know something is amiss. For the people who feel a bit, well, the word that comes to mind is stalked, that is exactly what they are doing. Whether it’s insecurity, mommy issues, or what have you, it’s not normal. Kind of like the boyfriend/girlfriend that texts all day long, or it’s a given they can drop by any time, and you’ll be delighted. It’s a personal thing. Some find that great, others feel smothered. Well, this cat is the feline version of…I texted you like ten-twenty times. Where are you? I haven’t heard from you in half an hour…..lonely….need you. 😦 😦 😦 😦
The good news is you can break up with a human. What does one do with a cat? The shelter? Nope. Friends? Nope. A friend fallen on hard times was how I ended up with “Smoke”.
To be honest, she’s a cat, and if I need space, out she goes. It’s a given that she’s outside anyway. She’s a feral cat, well, ex, and you try to keep one indoors, or this one anyway. If I don’t want her in my lap, off my lap she goes If she “yells” at me for something, ditto. If I don’t let her walk on the keyboard as I type this, she’s not on the keyboard. I work from home, so that’s not happening.. I’m here because I still feel like a jerk, even though I believe I have the right to have space from an animal in my home. I feel like there is something “off” about animals like this, and wish I knew what to do.

While I feel it’s reasonable to want some space from an animal living in your home, there is something about Smoke that feels unreasonable, like the partner that wants your undivided attention, or else. That’s not normal, and it’s not normal behavior for an animal either, especially a cat. I wish I knew what to do about it, because a cat like this has issues.
I’m pretty late to the game here, but I’m having the same feelings as you, Andy. I don’t think you deserved that barrage of angry comments above, as I think you were just curious about that type of behavior and you were simply observing your effect on the cat. These people might have demanding relationships with their cats, but many cats I know do not want excessive attention and cuddling….My cat Tigger wouldn’t cuddle with me any time that I tried (all the time). My new cat, June, gets to be in my lap and fawned over for at least 2 hours a day in one way, shape or form..but will quite literally BITE me if I want my own space. I think it’s definitely abnormal behavior and VERY irritating. Looking for advise on this, but I am looking for solutions and not helicopter-mom-like opinions. My CH cat also wants go outside all the time and I want to figure out a way to safely make that happen for my Junebug– I’d rather her be happy than live a long, depressing life inside only. ( I let her out on a long leash for her to sniff grass and bask in the sun, but she seems to want more wandering space).
Um, let him in your house? That’s pretty cruel to expect him to live outside 24/7! I’m surprised he hasn’t run away yet, I would if someone expected me to live in their backyard! Perhaps you should find him an owner who actually wants him and has a home he’s welcome in. Some people are so selfish.
Why did you rescue a cat if you didn’t want a pet? I agree with many others, find Crixus a home where his needs can be met. Do you keep your dog outside all night? The cat deserves a loving home.
Both of my cats have become very clingy and or demanding in the last month. I don’t know of any changes that have been made so I’m not sure what to do. They are both over 10 years old and have never exhibited this behavior before. HELP if you can. Thanks
Karen Aubin
This sounds very much like the behavior exhibited by my cat recently, he is also an older cat, 8 years or so (he was a rescue so not entirely sure). He was always very independent and his health is very good. I would like to know, as I’m sure you would Karen, what could be the cause of this sudden huge change in his behavior. He is excessively clingy, a complete 180 degrees of his usual independent ways. I have looked all over the internet for an answer, but there seems no clear reason why a cat that is older and has passed the time of mating behavior to so suddenly become insecure. He is an outdoor cat but rarely strays from his own yard in the last 2 years and his fresh air time is limited by his own choice. He would stray when he was younger but not for 2 years now. I am baffled and he has been health checked. We changed his diet to Blue Buffalo over a year ago, all natural, thinking maybe his diet was a problem. Am I wrong to be concerned?
In reply to Andy – is Crixus fixed? The loud meowing is typical male behaviour when they reach sexual maturity, especially if there is a female in heat somewhere in the neighborhood. Talk to your vet.
I have two cats one belong to my Mother before she passed away almost three years ago, but when I took my Mom in I also took her cat in. This car head butts me if I am on the phone or watching tv. , and must be right be hind my head every minute I am.home this cat is a indoor cat .and about 6 years old. The other cat I rescued the family that had nurse him back to health because he had been a stray and was in bad condition.so they took him to the vet and he got better but started beating up their other cats so the were going to take him to the pound.welliI knew he would be put to sleep so I took him he was 2 years old then he is 16 years old and likes to go outdoors but lately he has to lay right next to me when I am on my couch sometimes he lays right across my feet. Never did that before always wad the bully on the block. But I love them both but some times feel smothered.
My kitten is 6 months old and me and my husband adore her, she is very clingy, basically when we are at home she is always with us, even if we’re at home all day. But what is concerning us is what she will be like when we have children, we are planning on starting a family soon but I cannot see how it will work if she carries on like she is. If we have to shut her in a separate room when we are cooking she meows and scratches at the door and she does the same when she goes outside. We really need some advice on this, is there a way to make her less clingy or will this lessen with age?
It may help to give her some dedicated quality time every day. Personally, I think it’s sweet when our cats are devoted to us, but I know sometimes it can seem a bit much. Giving her some one-on-one time every day may help so she becomes less needy during other parts of the day. Good luck!
Simple. Giver her a playmate.
Okay I just got my cat and I don’t know if she’s a kitten or in between adult hood but I rescued her from my job ever since I brought her home she has done nothing but lightly paw at me rub up against my face and if I’m not constantly touching her she will hop down and meow how do I get her to stop being so clingy?
I got my cat when she was about 6 weeks old or so. She is now a little over a year old and up until about 5 days ago she always paid more attention to my roommate and pretty much ignored me. I figured it was because I health issues and cannot work and my roommate works so I was always the disciplinarian keeping her out of trouble. My roommate always fed her and she spent a great deal of time in my roommates room. Recently I replaced some furniture and rearranged my apartment. About 5 days ago or so my cat has been in the living room with me and always at my desk, either sitting on my desk in front of my laptop as I work or sitting on the shelf that slides out from the side. She even sits behind me when I am in my chair. It is strange because up until a few days ago she rarely came near me. Now she spends nearly all day close to me and often initiating play with me. I am curious about the change in behavior. Thank you
My cat clings to me when I am taking him to the vet. Otherwise he likes belly rubs, and sits on my lap as soon I get home and when I get up in the morning.
Well i am 26 weeks pregnant and my cat listens to me only not my mother brothers or sister or my husband just me i went away for a 5 days and when i came back my cat seems very sad nd very clingy he sleeps on my feet and or sleeps while hugging my hand nd doesn’t seem to eat much idk whats wrong with him i want to kno if its something serious or not plz help i missmy old buddy 😦
My cat wants to put his paw on my face, lay on my chest, lick my face, keep his gums or lips on my skin constantly. Right now he is all up in my face and petting my face. He is a huge kitty, this is getting crazy.
I have always had cats growing up, so I knew how to handle them, I adopted a shelter cat who’s about 2-3 years old and excessively needy. She’s my second shadow. At first I thought, “Well, she’s new to the home, I have to get used to her, she has to get used to me, etc”.
I have established a routine for playtime, cuddle time (she’s LOVES attention), feeding time. I even adjusted my work schedule to be more consistent. She has windows to look out of, an assortment of toys, full roam of the house. None of it matters. A year later after adopting her, she’s still needy to the point I want to rehome her sometimes.
She also has an obsession with food; too much is never enough. She gained two pounds in the year I have had her which is too much. I cut her food back and she lost half a pound in a few months.
She cries. She meows. She “whines”. This is constant when I am home. I have no idea how to please her much less help her. Two vet checkups and a small fortune later determine physically she is very healthy.
I made a commitment to her and to myself, so I will plow along, but good God…if in another year her behavior hasn’t changed….I may have to backtrack on that commitment for my own sanity.
I have just taken a 2 year old from a shelter and he is very needy and demanding and again I cannot seem to feed him enough. I am giving wet food twice a day because that is what he was used to at the shelter but we have biscuits down all the time for our 2 other cats, he does not seem to want to eat them. I am not giving him to him but he cries and yowles at me all the time in the kitchen. I do think he has some Siamese or oriental in him which would account for how noisy he is. The shelter told me they wormed him before I picked him up but just in case I have wormed him again and he is still doing it. I understand they could only give him so much time in the shelter and I don’t mind him being needy but I cannot understand why he seems to be hungry all the time
Oh Kurt, I am so sorry your cat is doing this to you. I am ” fostering” a CH 7 month old kitten and he is very sweet and does not talk but twice a day. I like that! I would go crazy with a talkative cat. But I feel like I can’t let him go back to the shelter either so as he is a very good cat he is not my ideal cat. I cat of 15 Years died 2 months earlier and I though I was ready to love again. Well if you can’t take it anymore take your cat to a no kill shelter.
Hi Mary,
I like talkative cats, to a point, but as I mentioned this one never keeps quiet. She’s not even Siamese either (she’s a calico)! I’m learning to slowly deal with it. She’s done a lot for me emotionally, so the least I can do is work with her. After all, I made a commitment to her and to myself, so if I broke it, I think the damage done emotionally to both of us by sending her back to a shelter would be worse than dealing with her idiosyncrasies.
You a good person for doing that and keeping your promise! I wish you all the luck that it goes well in the future!
So. I have a cat named hermione. She is my baby. I got her at 6 weeks old and can vouch for the strong mother bond. I can’t have children of my own so she has become my family. My whole world. But she’s always up my butt and meowing at me every few seconds because I’m not showing her attention. I’ve recently gotten her fixed and hope this will calm her down a bit .. We shall see
Its strange how u lot rescue a cat and den be heartless and want to rehome them. They have feelings too. I have 3 cats. 2 Who i rescued. I have a small apartment and have to divide my attention to all 3. but i would never rehome them or give them to a shelter. If the cats were human babies would u give them away? they cling because they love u not because they want to annoy u. When u get annoyed lightly push the cat and say no in a harder tone. Cats understand through ur tone and body language.
Some of us have long days at work, families, and other stressors in our lives so to have a pet that is excessively high maintenance is not helpful in that regard. A lot of us don’t have the luxury of spending 24/7 with our pets like some people do either to satiate a pet’s constant need for attention.
Your (ur) condescension and arrogant tone is beyond offensive. People (ppl) come here and other forums to (2) look for (4) suggestions on how to deal with overly needy cats, plus to vent their frustrations, not to be talked down to. For the record, rehoming is a valid option unless all, and I mean an exhaustive “all”, options and methods have been explored and utilized; it should never be a option used as first choice or on a whim.
Unless you have some valid, pertinent advice, sometimes keeping to yourself (urself) is a better route. Simply because you can post a comment, doesn’t mean you should.
My cat was a stray cat, we’ve had her a while now. She became pregnant. Few days ago she had 1 kitten but was very small and came out tail first and got stuck. It was her first litter. I had to help pull kitten out. Ever since then she has been very clingy to me, follows me everywhere, cuddles up to me. Anyone have any ideas why this has happened??
Matt, she has become this way with you because she trust you. You helped her when she needed help the most and is still in loving mode and showing you she is thankful.
I just got a kitten that will not leave me alone for a second, and she cries as soon as I go into the other room. The main problem with having her around is that she scratches me constantly, and she was just doing so and walking all over my face while I was trying to sleep. Will it scar a cat at all if you don’t let them sleep in the same room as you? She’s in the other room right now and I feel terrible, but I really need some reassurance! Thank you!
Kittenhood is the perfect time to set boundaries as the are young. If you do not want her in your bedroom, keep the door shut, even when you’re not in there. The key is to be consistent so she learns that the room is off-limits.
I have a shelter cat who was 18 months old and that’s what I had to do. She had everything she needed plus full roam of my home *except* the bedroom. It took a some time (couple of weeks) but the crying eventually stopped once she figured out my routine.
Again, you have to be consistent with your own behavior and expectations or the cat will not learn.
Hi Kurt! Don’t know for sure but your calico sounds like my Sarah …also a calico. It has been a heck of a ride and I went thru many many a time wondering if I could take her behavior anymore.Sarah is now 8 and I got her from a shelter at 6 mon. Numerous and expensive vet bills later found out she suffers from rippling skin or hyperathesia(Not the right spelling) Once I found out there was a sense of calm in me as I realized it wasn’t her fault,it was a real issue. As I started dealing with her in a more calm manner as you would a child with behavioural issues ,lo and behold she started calming down as well. She still has issues but as the years have passed has grown into a loving and adorable cat. I wish you luck…..it isn’t easy and don’t feel like any of it is your fault . Good Luck!
Very insightful, mine would definitely be demanding. She is quite persistent when she wants something, or just your attention. She is now going on her first birthday and I feel we have been communicating well with each other. I also have her mother, who may I say, is so layed back.
Hi all. I have a 4 year old cat named Boo who has been with me since I took her in as a foster at 4 weeks old (I bonded so closely with her she became a permanent family member). She is a very small but healthy cat full of personality. I recently moved to a new house (about 4 weeks ago) and ever since she has been a clingy, crying ball of fur. My other 2 rescues have settled in nicely (all 3 are fixed & strictly indoors). Having fostered dozens of cats in the past, I like to think I have a fairly good understanding of cats and I assume her new found dependency is a result of the move. I am wondering, however, if anyone has suggestions on how to ease my Boo’s transition? I did everything gradually… introducing them to a new room only after they were confident with the last. I’ve kept our schedule the same and made sure to spend extra time playing, cuddling, etc. I understand 4 weeks is not a super long adjusting period for such a big change but is there any additional advice for Boo’s sake & my own? Something I should do differently? Is it possible I am coddling her too much? We have moved in the past but never had an issue with being overly dependent. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I have a Siamese named Tippy, who has to be on me all of the time! Most of the time I love it! He is my baby! We have 3 other cats, one is his litter mate, his name is Frankie. The other cats seem to know that I am Tippys domain and look around before jumping up on me. When he comes in the room, they jump off. Sometimes his brother tries to stand his ground, only to have a cat fight on my lap. When I’m gone he lays by the door and yowls, my boyfriend tries to console him to no avail. And if i am gone too long he chews his hair off! He will NOT lay on anyone but me. I love it that he loves me so much but i feel bad knowing a trip to the store might result in a bald spot.
I have a very shy..pudgy…almost 14 year old gorgeous Russian Blue. She is still eating/peeing/pooping…etc..as perfectly normal. She seems to have some discomfort when i rub her lower back..near her butt. I have a stepping stool for her for bed/couch. Should i worry? Also ..I live alone.. so shes understandably very attached to me however the last few days she wouldnt leave my side..when home. I Am nervous..should I be?
I got my cat from a place were there was to many cats and kittens, i got her when she was very young, when i picked her up she cuddled up in my arms right away i knew she was my baby, now she follows me every were in the house, i can not even go to the bathroom without her,she has to lay with me when i am sitting on the chair watching tv,i got her to speek to me when she wants food, she even says ohno when i scold her . She says other words like no,oww and mom, she is an amazing little girl, she will be thee years old in march, and i love her she is my baby girl.
Baha I have a 5 month old male that’s the same. Got him from a shelter and when I opened the cage to hold him he threw himself at me and cuddled to my chest purring like a fiend. Hes been purring ever since. He also has to sit in my lap every morning and after every nap and if possible wants to nap in my arms. I’d say he’s more demanding than needy…I mostly just feel adored. In fact right now I’m trying to type on my tablet while he’s lying in front of it on my neck….like a scarf. That purrs.
my 1yr old keeps pulling her hair out when i am away, but stops when she is carried or runs up to me to lay down and constantly licks my face. then she just want to lay on my neck and that gets awfully hot after awhile. she was fine a few weeks ago. she was the playful one out of all 8 i have. only thing that changed is me renting basement to tenant. if i leave to go out to eat or run errand, she pulls fur to the point where she bleeds.
hmm .sec.. i did move my front room furniture a few weeks ago, too
My 4 and a half month old kitten just recently lost her brother and playmate. She witnessed hin being attacked by a pitbull and he died. Since this happened, she has become very clingy…although I totally understand and I give her constant attention, I want to try and help her. She wants to be with me all the time…even when I’m on the loo or in the shower, she gets under the covers with me at night…but the most worrying aspect, is she has started throwing herself at me when I am getting ready to go out. This is not only painful but I can see her distress and it is heart breaking. Please do not advise me to get another cat, as I feel this would be unfair on the new cat…pitbulls an ongoing problem and current cat cannot be let out. Any helpful advice would be great!!
My youngest cat does not like me going to work, if i get up and put my everyday type of clothes on she is all around me following me around the house. If i put my work uniform on she is nowhetebto been seen she sulks. As soon as i come in the door after being atvwork she is eitger sat on the bannister or lying on her back on the stairs wanting her tummy tickled. My older cat is very much everything on her terms, you try and pet her and she doesnt want it she will lash out but if she sits on your lap she will lick your hand until you stroke her, love em.
I have a female persian. I rescued her and before me she had been passed along from home to home. She follows me around the house and waits for me to say “let’s go to the room”. She’sattached to me and doesn’t trust anyone else. Lately I’ve been spending the weekends out of the house, spending the night, and she’ll freak out. She will “tell” my family to go to my room and show them I’m not there. She’s a very sweet cat.
Loved this, great read, very helpful thank you 🙂
My kitten is incredibly clingy and demanding. She meows to me in the most extreme fashion if I’m not paying her attention. And immediately goes silent when I’m down. I’m due to have a newborn in June, any suggestions on what will help curb this behavior!?
My cat 9months old has to be in the same room as me even im using the bathroom she will sit in the sink
When we first got our cat she hardly ever came around me as a normal for my children. When she did I would just push her away. Then one night I woke up with her curled up next to me and u pushed her away. (Her fur makes me sneeze) This went on for several nights to the point I just gave in completely. Now all she does is follow me around, goes to bed when i go to bed. Goes under the blankets and snuggles up against my tummy. Climbs up on my lap at the dinner table, couch or recliner. I am wondering why all of a sudden she is doing this with me and no-one else in my family when her and I never had a relationship like she did with the rest of my family???
I received Buttaz at 6 weeks old he is now 5 months I put new blanket set in my room and it seems like ever night and in the day all he wants to do is get under the cover & sleep !he normally sleeps with the kids I wonder why is he in my bed all the time now!
My cat, Star is super clingy. he will literally follow me into every room and if I happen to disappear from his sight for more than a couple of seconds he will meow the place down and come searching for me once he has me he will meow again almost like he’s telling me off. I’m usually away most weekends so he is left with my Grandma and he acts up, constantly meowing and doing things he knows he’s not allowed to do like pull on the blinds. He follows me to bed and lays right next to me, head on the pillow and under the quilt and will not move until I wake up the next day. It’s almost like 8 have my own personal bodygaurd :,)
I have 5 cats and a dog . We actually had 6 cats but one passed last year. All of which have been with me since they were babies . All the cats were raised with our 13 year old Rottweiler that passed last year and Two months later we lost our precious Russian Blue( both I miss so much and both were rescues) . We then took in an abused puppy who has been raised by the cats. It is quite humorous . They are not cats and a dog … They are all Cat-Dogs! We laugh because the pup acts like a cat and our cats act like a dog. They are every bit family. They all are clingy and always have been. They love being held like a baby. They will do anything to get your attention. They will have conversations and run when you call their name . Yes!!! Each one knows their name. Sometimes they will all want my attention at the same time, stepping on each other to get a good spot on my lap . Although they are clingy, they are very secure and independent. My friend says it’s a pattern with me . ” your kids are lovey and sweet , so is your dog and your cats. Do we see a pattern here? ” she says. Lol I can’t help it I’m a lovey person . And don’t mind my furbabies being that way . Although sometimes it can be difficult to do things.
Trusting one’s feelings regarding any issue with Cats is the MOST important thing. they can and will communicate to you through your own feelings visions, thoughts, ideas…. LISTEN to what you are feeling or thinking when around your Little furry companion.
do NOT brush anything off, thinking it too weird….. they are precious little souls who ask only for Love and shelter….. we need to be able to provide them with this love. NO cat is clingy, or has any behavior problems… this is a human delusion that is imposed on any cat that does NOT fit into the human way of thinking….. absolute rubbish…. trust ONLY your own feelings and that of your cat….She will tell you what She needs every time…… they deserve all the love and companionship and compassion that we can give them, for they offer the most precious gift that NO human has been able to give on this planet: UNCONDITONAL LOVE. Pay attention and LOVE these beautiful souls and you will know what true love really is……
I have amazing cat and he’s always been clingy but the last month or so he’s been super clingy… And I am wondering why …. Can cats detected sickness in you ? I been really stressed and trying to get doctor apt for scope etc … Can a cat tell if something is really wrong with you and is this his way of telling me ?
I don’t know if pets can sense illnesses but they can certainly sense our stress. Perhaps the clinging is his way of trying to reassure you!
Well, all of the above!!!my crazy lazy kitty “loafer” is extreMly clingy. I mean when I bend down to look in my mirror as I do my makeup he jumps on my back and tries to roll around. He sleeps right on my chest, and follows me all around the house. I can’t even use the restroom without him on my lap. We did rescue him so he is without illness referring to his paper work but it all makes sense with what’s listed above. I love the little big guy though
I have 2 cats, both boys 5 and a half years old, they are litter mates. We got them at 5 weeks old. Mom was no where to be found, they where bottle babies. Jeffrey is my cat and PJ is my fiances cat. (at the beginning PJ was mine and Jeff was hers but they switched that around) lol. PJ is always with her and Jeff is always with me. Jeff is extra clingy. He goes where ever I go, when I shower he sits on the toilet bowl, as soon as I sit or lay down he is on top of me, he will climb up my back to kiss my ears and my neck all the time, if I’m not paying attention to him and talking to someone he will jump up and hug me across my lips, he is, slways trying to eat my hair (which I really hate), and he gets very jealous whenever my fiance is showing me attention. He will even go as far as to hiss at her sometimes. Lately PJ has also been starting to cling to me more (of course not as much as Jeff because that’s not possible), but now that PJ is wanting to be with me so much more it will sometimes cause them to fight. I have been a vet tech for 15 years and I have always had dogs. My dog passed away about 2 years ago, I was devastated, and I never thought I could love a cat as much as I loved that dog (China was her name, she, was half pit half lab). I was so wrong. I love my cats so much, especially Jeff. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. And most of the time I love how affectionate and clingy he is!!
to Melissa, why would you want to CHANGE such blatant displays of Love and absolute emotional honesty. this world is sadly lacking in such exquisite REAL behavior….. Love is the most precious power in the universe… and you have been so very blessed with such love…. enjoy it….. EMBRACE it….. you may never experience such love again, in this lifetime….. it is a precious GIFT that has been given to you…… do NOT take it for granted and try to CHANGE the way Love has come into your life. Your Love given back to these felines will heal them of any past fears caused by previous human beings….. LET IT happen….
my cat is identical to the first picture to size color eye color paws belly everything
My cat has gotten significantly more clingy within the past two months. She refuses to eat alone and sometimes begs me to feed her by hand. But at the same time she is very excited when I bring in a can or a plastic bag or anything like food, as well as going after my food when I try to eat. She follows me around and sleeps practically on me as much as she can but she also loudly demands to go out on my balcony and she’ll generally have one to two crazy playtime spells in a day, so she seems healthy. She doesn’t seem to be in pain, she even tries to rough-house with me regularly and her only sensitivities are when she’s wound up or I touch ticklish places. She is also sleeping much more though as she turns 1. Is this aging behavior I am seeing?
I also noticed that she seems to have almost maternal instincts. She has a favorite toy that she plays with but then puts in her bed and sometimes carries in her mouth like a kitten. She has also been very attentive when I am in pain or crying, and lately I have been suffering from pretty bad bouts of depression, so could that be influencing her too?
All animals feel OUR feelings and thoughts…. it would be WISE to make sure that we are “giving off” or “emanating” positive feelings for the benefit of our animal companions…. even though we may feel “depressed” , we should always consider FIRST how our negativity will effect the animals around us…. they DESERVE positive feelings and energies and NOT the negativity that human beings seem more than willing to “off load”…. Our animal companions are NOT in our lives to take on OUR problems… if we are feeling low or depressed it is OUR responsibility to get HELP to ensure that our home is GOOD for our animal companions…. they offer precious unconditional love to us constantly, and there is NO such thing as a clingy cat…. Animals are simple MORE attuned to emotions and feelings than human beings are (who have been conditioned to live in our heads), so when we see a cat this is Absolutely HONEST in their emotions, human beings “label” them “clingy…..” this is NOT correct…. they are simply asking us to BE that honest emotionally, and if we cannot be that way, then it is up to US to get the appropriate help in order to become emotionally honest and expressive so that Cats can enjoy our company instead of US polluting their home environment with OUR negativity, which is NOT in any way, kind or loving to our Blessed animal companions.
A few months ago I was living with a room mate who had a house left to him by his late mother. He left food and water out for a few cats that lived there but he didn’t claim them or give them any real attention so when we moved in, we claimed one. I took this little rescue in and a couple night after a foreclosure and the room mate moving out, he threw a party that trashed the house. That night, I brought in a litter box for the claimed cat and even brought in the other unclaimed kitty to protect. The next morning, the unclaimed cat was dead. She passed peacefully in the night, stretched out and sleeping comfortably in some blankets. I wrapped her up in one of the blankets so she could move on with something to call her own (it was one of my better fluffy blankets too). I mourned her loss and then me and my boyfriend drive cross country to live with my parents. We drove with the dog and the new kitty. Amazingly, she loved it! She kept on the floor or in laps and when she wasn’t sleeping, she was looking out Windows and even stuck her head out for pets with the dog in drive thrus. Now I am with my mom. And step dad. They had one dog and two kittens. She is extremely needy and demanding. Always needing affection. However she tends to charge, hiss, and/or swipe at the kittens. She mostly ignores the dogs. But in the two months I’ve been here, she has had problems with the kittens. I have to put her in my room when no one is around to babysit. She has her own food and water and litter box. How do I help her feel more secure and comfortable with the kittens? I know she has had a rough life in the past. She is probably in young to medium adult age range. Like 4-7 maybe? She is good health since I took her to the vet before moving cross country. I’ve seen her sleeping with my dog and even laying next him or his paws touching her with no problems. She doesn’t charge him as much as as she used to as well. But now it’s all redirected at the kittens. What’s your opinion on this situation? What can I do to help her?
My female cat (noob) is so clingy. We have had her about 4 years. And the past couple months every where I go she follows. When I shower she sits in front of the shower door. Or when I try to go to the bathroom she sits in front of me and will meow. When I stop walking she meows at me. She will have fresh water, food and kitty liter. I am a stay at home home so she gets lot of attention. And if I sit somewhere she will meow at me until I pick her up to lay on me. She would jump but she’s a little cubby haha. She does have a medixal condition with her eye. So im not sure if that could be bugging her or if she just wants attention. Could there be something wrong with her? Or do you think she just wants attention.
Id still rather be trained by my cat than not have her at all. I love that annoying little brat
EVERY animal is a blessing in our lives. do NOT take them for granted….. they will NOT always be with you. Every day you have with them is a GIFT….. the arrogance and thoughtlessness of human beings on this planet is staggering. the majority of human beings simply do NOT realize that any animal that comes into their life is a GIFT…… Days are NUMBERS…. and every day is a day LESS that the animal will be with you. is this depressing ….. NO it is REALITY…. ENJOY every day with these beings and let them teach you about LOVE….. something which human beings sorely NEED to learn…..
First off… locking your cats put at night is NOT cruel. I have 3 wonderful cats. They all have their own little personality. Mine go out back at night and come in during the day. They know that when I call and I’m sitting the door they can come in for the night or stay out. I’m sorry but you can’t let am animal dictate your household. There should be a happy balance.
Y cat is usually a cat that wants a rub here an there change dramatically. For the past to days, she is constantly in my lap demanding to be rubbed and following me everywhere. She has never been like this. Its to the point of freaking me out. What’s going on with her? I’m really worried. She appears to be in perfect health. She is eating an drinking fine. I just don’t know.
Sorry about the first line. Should have read “Y is my cat who is usually a cat who wants only a rub here and there, changed so dramatically?
Hi Tammy, Your Cat is trying to TELL you something about YOU and your life. Is there anything in your life that has changed over the past few days……?????? Cats are VERY sensitive to the psychic energies of you and that which is around you….. Maybe your cat is picking up on something that is NOT the best type of energy… Have you met any new people recently, that you do NOT feel comfortable with… or anything else like that…..???/ cats are NEVER wrong about psychic energies… She is definitely trying to tell you something I would LISTEN to her…. It may be VERY important to you and your life.
My cat is a clingy one. when i leave to go to the bathroom she meows behind the door and reaches for the rug under it, she will get ontop of counters and tables just to nudge on my face 1:I
My cat is 9 years old and she just started getting clinging?! And nothing has changed In where we live or anything?! What should I do?!
My ch kitty is a demanding kitty. I got him off craigslist and from the way i got him i assume he was in an abusive home. The guy just had him from the back of his neck and obvioudly the cat was frightened. Ever since that day forward my cat has been attached to me. I have 4 other cats and the minute i give them attention (little man) gets jealous. Yes thats his name lol. He will follow behind me night and day around the house and rub on my face when i lay down. No matter how many times put him on the floor he will jump back up until i give him attention. Yes, its a bit much for me but i still give in. Like always. Haha.
I am not a cat person at all. In fact I have had nightmares about them my whole life. Anyway one of my kids brought a cat home and yes I flipped out. I was pretty pissed in fact. Well that is until the little guy charmed his way into my heart. He is very sweet (I am trying to get him to stop giving love nips although they are very soft it scares the hell out of me), and if he could crawl in my belly to be with me all day he would. He has had a real rough go and I am not sure that he feels safe here. I have let him be his own cat and just been around when he needs me. I been pretty lonely and very sad for a long time now. It’s nice to feel needed. It’s dumb to say but I think we are healing each other. I am not sure that him being needy is a bad thing.
Chunky is demanding and is a daddies boy if I talk on the phone to my hubby he knows the tone in my voice and talks with me he is the older brother of boxer and the meanie dominate male but is now SO much smaller then his little brother but so sassy! Boxer is a mamas boy my needy needy is what I call him he is so sweet and listens he follow me and talks my head off if I don’t pay attention he will reach up and put a paw on my shoulder like hey woman as soon as I put him down he is right back under me. They will be one Dec 12th
I do believe I have a clingy cat… I got her when she was barley 2 weeks old our neighbors didn’t care her brothers and sisters where dead so I took her in. I was basically momma cat, now she’s over a year old and won’t leave my side she always follows me around like a puppy dog. She doesn’t like for anyone else to touch her she will throw a fit if someone else touches her she runs away when my parents talk to her or try to greet her. She runs straight into my bed room and will stay there until I go and get her. Any thoughts? If so e-mail me. gabbyhannah@yahoo.com

There is hope. One of my cats, a blind rescue, would not leave me for a second. Never. I feel guilty to admit I sometimes couldn’t stand her. With time, patience, strictness, clear boundaries, love, an endless supply of ‘no’, challenging her to make her feel safe to speak up and proving she’s fine on her own; it’s gotten a whole lot better. She went from super clingy and destructive (my poor wallpaper and furniture during my absence…) to leaving walls and furniture alone, and still clingy, but a great deal less. We have a long way to go, but she’s already turned into an admirable, resilient, headstrong lady with a relentless love, and unforgiving talent for making me trip. I swear, she can’t see, but she has a radar for exactly that place where I want to put my foot…
I only have one at the moment but with how clingy he is i might as well have 10 lol. He is part Siamese and i heard they can be quite demanding. i’ve had him since he was 7 weeks old and he is 9 months now and he will not leave my side.i’ll admit i baby him quite a bit but he is my baby so i think its okay. since the day i’ve had him he’s spent all day/everyday with me. its got to the point that if i leave him alone for 20 minutes when he sees me he’ll take a running go and climb my body just so he can perch on my shoulder.(: If i’m sitting he lays across my shoulders and if i’m laying he’s laid on my chest. sometimes he’ll wake me up with kisses on my nose. I’m just going to take it as a sign that he loves me lol.
We just got a new kitty, we adopted him from an animal shelter. He is 11 months but already full grown. It’s been 2 weeks since we adopted him and he has become insanely clingy he follows me around the house and always wants to be petted and every night he sleeps in my bed. I love the bond I have with him but I’m worried he will fret when I school starts because I haven’t left him alone for more than 4 hrs. Any tips
I left for christmas vacation on Dec 18 and just got back on Jan 3. So about 2 weeks. I have a cat that is a little over a year old and I’ve had hin since he was a kitten. Since I’ve gotten back he hasn’t left me alone, meows more often, just being alot more social than he was before I left. I’m hoping that it’s just because he’s missed me and is happy to see me, or if maybe it’s a health issue. Any and all feedback is welcomed. Thank you very much.
I have a Maine-Coon-mut that I rescued from a drainage ditch. Literally.
My wife, and her mother, died in 2013. Since then, she has constantly either been in my lap or near me and when I am home, she wants to be within arms length. She sleeps curled up with me every night, and when I left on vacation after a few days she became hostile (which is very out of character for her, she is a very loving cat). Is there anything I can do to make her less upset when I’m gone? I don’t want her to be upset when I go to visit my late wife’s parents (12+ hr drive).
Apparently after 2 or 3 days. she refused to eat. After 5 days, she would hide and scratch and hiss when anyone would try to console her. She is my cat and she is also the legacy of my late wife. If I were to take a road job, is there any way I could train or condition her to be okay by herself, or would I need to take her with me?
Thanks!
Chris: So sorry to hear about the loss of your wife. How heartbreaking for you and your fur baby. She feels the absence of her mom, and is feeling insecure hence the change in behavior.
When you have to go on the road, will she have constant care by a trusted companion/cat sitter? I hope so. It’s difficult for me (and my cat) for me to leave the house for a couple of hours. I’m just as attached to her as she is to me.
Someone previously commented that our pets are one of the biggest blessings in our lives not to be taken for granted. I couldn’t agree more. I may have rescued my cat, but she saved me in more ways than I could have ever imagined. It’s my responsibility to make sure she is best cared for and lives the happiest life possible.
Best of luck to you and your baby!
In response to Chris, regarding “training” your cat “be ok on its own ? ” The secret to this is to ALWAYS reassure your Blessed Companion that you will ALWAYS come home.. everytime you leave your house, even for a few minutes, you MUST reassure them that you will come back… Your Cat is RESCUING you !!!!! You are in desperate need of healing, through your loss of your Wife…. and This Darling Feline companion, is doing ALL she needs to do make sure YOU heal…. I would imagine that would humble anyone !!!!! to think that there is a being, completely different species that KNOWS you need healing…. why would you even consider LEAVING your cat AT ALL…… Have you considered that you might need to change your lifestyle, and stay at home more…. in order to HEAL from your loss ???? Cats are very astute and VERY attuned to our feelings, even when we are NOT attuned ourselves… LISTEN to what your Cat is trying to tell you…… sometimes the BEST way to heal from any loss is to simply BE.. and Cats are masters of this ability… !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG my rescue cat. four months in and shes following me around the house, checking where I am and wants me sitting next to her when she eats. Wants to be in the same room as me, glares at me if I am going out!!!! Goes to sleep if I say I am going out and she should too. LOL . She demands attention and then when I go to give it to her she runs off half the time and the other half shes jumping all over me wanting hugs. Winter is worse as she hates the cold and refuses to go out, preferring to lie next to the heating ha ha. I suppose I will get used to it…..
to share our lives with ANY animals we must put THEIR needs on equal par with our own. If you cannot provide the emotional support and love that your cats needs, do NOT have them in your life… it IS that simple. ANY animal from rescue situations have SPECIAL needs and requirements that human beings MUST allow for and understand…. Pay attention and LISTEN to your Feline companion, and give them what THEY need, NOT what you think they need…. there is a very big difference.
My bf and I adopted two kittens for Christmas, Bonnie and Clyde. Theyre brother and sister, Bonnie is very independent and loves to explore, and it’s nearly impossible to keep her inside if the door opens. Clyde on the other hand, he is very close to me, he is always on my chest when I’m sitting. He loves to “help” when I do anything, when I go to bed he has to sleep on my neck. It doesn’t matter how many times I push him on my lap or above my head, he’s gotta be on my neck. That’s not even the most aggravating thing, it never fails, at about 6 in the morning every day that my bf is gone at work dear Clyde decides to wake me up with fishy nose kisses and fluffy paws on my face. I can put him out of the bed room but he crys at the door until I let him back in. He is only like this when my bf isn’t here. If my be puts him out of the room he goes and plays or sleeps with his sister. I’m not sure what this possessive behavior is about or how to stop it 😩
to have ANY animal with us is a BLESSING…. if you are “aggravated” by your feline companions, you do NOT deserve to have them in your life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How destructive and negative you are, to impose YOUR reality of possessiveness onto these exquisite beings who are ONLY there to LOVE you, for NO other reason. Have you considered that you yourself are the possessive person…. how on earth can animals be “possessive “. Human beings constantly dump THEIR own realities and emotions onto animals, which then causes animals to become completely Irrelevant. You do NOT see your cats for the blessings they are bringing you… you see only yourself and your own possessiveness….. how narcissistic this is….. The cats you have in your life, would be much better off with someone who actually NEEDS them and Loves them… which is certainly NOT you. Wake up and StOP imposing YOUR negativity onto these exquisite beings…..
ALLOW your cat to be near you….. simple !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you cannot do this, you dont deserve to have this cat in your life…. Human beings can be so ignorant and simply NOT see what is right in front of them…. LOOK at what your cat is trying to tell you….. !!!!!!!!!!!
My kitty Mia has always been attached to me since I got her as kitten. As in she will follow me around and loves to cuddle. She is about 6 months old now, and she is an indoor cat. Frequently I let her go outside for fresh air and to roam around. Well today she went farther than she usually does and I couldn’t find her. Then she shows up, and ever since she came back she will not leave my side. If I’m sitting, she’s in my lap, if I’m walking, she follows me. I was hoping to get an idea or answer to why the sudden change of attachment after she came home?
My sister recently had an issue with her roommates, and her 3 cats ended up at my house. Two of them are little attention hogs who like to take turns being in my lap and demanding my attention. They’re cute as buttons, so I usually will love on them a bit before putting them outside the room to play with the other cats.
I have a 10 month old cat named Toffee who was separated way too early from her mother. I received her when she was around 2 1/2 months (I’ve taken in a pregnant mother cat and her six kittens before and they were all still drinking milk at 4 months). She is attached to my hip. Anywhere I go, baby has to follow. She kneads my clothes, blankets and has sucked on my shirt before. She’s also extremely vocal. She just likes to chat with me and tell me about her day I guess. When I lock a door anywhere in my house, she’s scratching and begging for me to open it so she can be inside for a good minute until she wants to leave. I’ve also found out she’s trying to mimic me going to the bathroom. She only pees in the sink when i’m in there with her and i’ve caught her trying to balance on the toilet (she’s still 5 month old kitten size so she kinda falls in a bit). I’ve had a few cats before her but i’ve never experienced an animal as affectionate as her. What does my other cat do? Cry, climb the door frames and plays fetch lol.
I adopted 2 shelter cats that I knew chronic GI/diarrhea issues, but wouldn’t take the statement “they can’t be healed” to heart. If people can be, they can be. I did a lot of research and grain-free dry and can food plus boiled or rotisserie chicken (no skin) did the trick after a good 3 months. During the healing time, the crying was awful as they would eat and the food passed right through them thus no nutrients stayed inside so they were always hungry. One still goes through this phase for a few days every 5 or 6 months and I know immediately he needs additional chicken as they stay on the grain-free food now. Although that helped these two rescues (both were appr. 2 years old when I got them), I had a stray arrive at my door early December 2015. Come to find out he was never fixed, is about 8 years old, and has a bullet in his back towards his hind legs (he nipped me a couple times so I knew he was in pain). I got him fixed, but they couldn’t remove the bullet without paralyzing him. He’s become mine and trust me HE THINKS HE’S SUPPOSE TO BE ALL MINE! I’m still, 6 months later, working with him trying to fit him into the family as I know he trusts me and I can’t stand the thought of him learning to trust another, but it is hard. I have patience; I just pray my husband continues to and my other cats. For now he hangs out mostly in my office (fortunately decent size) and the crazy cat loves vehicle rides so someone did love him one time before he arrived on my door steps.
Ever since my heat attack my cat thinks she needs to be on my lap all the time. Before that she didn’t want much to do with me. Whats up with that?
My cat gave birth to a litter of healthy kittens 24 hours ago (at least I think they’re healthy, no obvious signs of any problems) and she seems to want me near her much more often than before she gave birth. I do love it as she’s not normally very affectionate but I’m worried she’s trying to tell me that there’s something wrong?
A feral cat had 3 kittens in my greenhouse early in the am. 8 hrs. later she was gone with 2 kittens & never came back for the other. I have bottle fed him since day 1. He is now 7 weeks old. He follows me everywhere & meows loudly if he can’t see me. We have a crippled German Shepard 13 yrs & another deaf 15 yr old Shepard & a grumpy Chihuahua. Little Sammy (our new kitten) is getting quite the education learning from them all….lol
I got my new kitten 5 days ago. I am not home very much as I work late and she continuously meows during the day according to my flatmates and when I am home she is so clingy and purrs and meows all the time and it’s so infuriating and annoying. Especially when I’m trying to sleep and all I can hear is loud purring and have her rubbing my face, please help
So is it a bad thing that they became clingy?
I have had my brother and sister cats since birth. Male and female. They are 13. It is with a very heavy heart I say, I lost Goldie on Valentine’s Day this year. I should not have happened in my opinion. Ever since Blackie the sister has gotten so clingy, she was somewhat before, but, not like now. She was never fond of her brother, she tolerated him, and he knew where he stood with her. He was the biggest love. Toward the end of fear Goldie’s life, she let him snuggle. I’m sorry to go on, I’m truly still heart broken over the loss. He was 19 lbs, long haired. Gold with huge white mame and all white paws and belly. Long long whiskers, as pretty as he was loving. So missed.
To complicate matters, my daughter, did a wonderful thing by rescuing a cat from out local shelter, only 2 weeks after the loss of Goldie. Too soon, for me anyway, but, he’s here. Leo is his name, 1 year old, full of piss and vinegar. He is a Norwegian forest cat, beautiful. Poor Blackie, wants nothing to do with him. However, Leo, unlike Goldie, doesn’t get it. He just won’t leave her alone. For that reason, his home is in my daughters room. Believe me, it doesn’t suck to be Leo either. He wants for nothing/love/space you name it. Back to Blackie/it’s kind of a double whammy for her and me. She’s so so clingy/just like a newborn. If she could nurse, she probably would. If anyone has any helpful advise, I sure would appreciate it. Truly, Carolyn
I found my boy Sam at 4-6 weeks old, he’s a red point Siamese and I’ve been told by many people they couldn’t have ever dealt with his clingyness. I have never had my own cat before but he is an amazing boy. He lets me know it’s breakfast time, dinner time, if there is a gap in his food bowl that needs to be covered, he loves to watch me cook and follows me around everywhere. I joke all the time I need a front carrier to take him running lol he cries when I have to leave but cries for me as soon as I’m home and we get some snuggle time. He plays with his chihuahua brother and loves big paper bag caves. He’s 5 months old now and discovering new places to jump so I’m looking at putting up shelves for him. I’ve read a few other people state how their cat is “aggravating” it took me some time to get used to Sammy needing me, I was never mean but I didn’t understand since I’ve only ever had dogs and they never acted like that. I just took some time and realized he was so tiny when I found him, just a baby who needed a mommy and that’s what I did. I cleaned him until he learned, I spent many sleepless nights up with him, had a lot of long play sessions and sleepy snuggle sessions. It was worth it, I look forward to the next 7 months marking his first birthday and what a big adventure that will be.
I have a demanding cat and one that recently become clingy , I also caught a stray cat I don’t know if he’s clingy or just showing his thankfulness for me taking him in but he usually always wants to lay on my stomach and give me kisses all over my face and sleeps with me at night so with my stray cat I don’t know if he is clingy towards me I don’t know he’s needy or just him showing me love I can’t tell
Yep, this is me and my Oscar all the way. He’s a rescue from off the streets, literally. I started feeding him abt 8yrs ago when I moved into my complex. We bonded and I feel in love, couldn’t leave him homeless any longer. Summers and winters are so rough. I was told by neighbors that he’s been on the streets for at least 10yrs. He’s a Tough Cookie who’s had a hard life. I’m very surprised he’s survived so long. It’s only been about 6mths since I moved him into my home. I don’t have any other pets, my sweet Sasha passed away this March, dog. Hurts soooo bad! So, Oscar gets all my attention now, living it up! If I’m sitting on the couch or the recliner here he comes to lay right on me. He gets so close to my face and starts bumping his head on my head. He literally falls asleep on my chest, woth his face in my face. But I guess this clingy behavior is normal for feral cats. I get love bites, I’m tripping over him, you name it. I truly feel his love for me and appreciation. I tell people you think I rescued him, but in fact he rescued me!

We have ranch cats, and thanks to wandering and coyotes the individuals cycle, at the usual “two years max” for near-feral cats. They keep the mouse, rabbit, gopher and starling numbers manageable on the ranch itself (coyotes and raptors keep the rodent pest numbers controlled in the open range.)
But our CH cat, about a year and a half old, has broken the cycle! I’m in bed right now, getting up to start the routine in 10 minutes, and Twitchy is sound asleep covered in kittens. Even the feral half-grown kittens will go up to him for attention (they run away when we approach unless it’s feeding time.) He is likely daddy to most of the current batch, and acts as a kind of birth control since he considers himself the alpha tom but has questionable aim when mounting a queen.
Oddly his CH symptoms improve dramatically when he is challenging his two brothers, who at this point run if they see him coming.
It is funny as he can’t groom himself without falling over, has no front teeth left from landing on his face over and over (rinse, repeat!), cuddles me and whines whenever I walk out of his comfort zone, sleeps with me and often needs lap comfort and deep massage when he gets too agitated to control his muscles. But having all the kittens for cuddles and comfort helps him as much as the kittens are helped, and gives Snowball (his favorite girlfriend) a break.
And now I have two special needs cats. One litter was mixed up and half abandoned by an incompetent mom – she kept only one, but kept losing two others. I rescued them half starved and with eye infections, one was flopping and looked like he was going to be dead by morning. I have a horror of babies dying cold and hungry, so I figured a bottle and cuddling would at least have him slip away in comfort. Surprise! In the morning he was awake and in my bed meowing for more bottle. His sister is catching up in size with the others (a week older and twice his size) but it looks like his pituitary is damaged as he is half the weight and size his age should be, and gaining less than an ounce a day. He and Twitchy are cuddle buddies, and I joke “go to your Uncle Daddy!” when he whines for me to feed him. I built him a dry food dispenser just his size, the other cats can only scoop out a few pieces at a time, but he can get his whole head in and eat his fill.
All the behaviors I see here in the comments are very much kitten behaviors. I see this over and over, and the moms handle this by swatting and hissing. Eventually the kittens figure it out. We keep our housecats in a permanent state of kittenhood (we did it in the transition from wolf to dog) amd some handle it better (by our standards) than others. Discipline, gentle, firm and loving, is really the best way to handle it.
I need help…PLEASE. I adopted a 5 years sweet cat from the shelter. I have had her 1 week. Reading the about I see issues that relate to what I am experiences ..she is in a new environment, she has an UPI and on meds for that, she also (I believe) was taken from her mother too soon and sucks on a blanket in my lap …she clings to me and follows me everywhere. I adore her but I also need to work and take care of my home ..what can I do to help her?
Our cat Mikey is 12 years old and has recently become clinging. My sister in the daytime and me at night. He rescue by my sister when he was a kitten but like I said only became clinging recently. We got a new kitten 2 years ago but they are friend and he also clinging but not as bad his name is Rusty
my cat is both clingy and demanding she is constantly all over me her sister on the other hand very stand offish complete oppisites my cat has to be touched all the time her sister is more like touch me when i say you can my cat will go on licking you till you leave the room and close the door so she cant any more she is kind of a minirature furry love bully.
lately I’ve got this problem with my 6 y o Burma cat , he always used to be a normal fairly independent cat , minding his own bussines most of the time , 3 months ago we had to move from the house we lived for 5 years and eversince we settled down to a new place his behavior changed dramatically,he becomed overly attached ,clingy and very loud asking for atention ,I tried getting him new toys ,best nutrition that I can find but nothing works ,it came to a point where I can’t take a shower without him standing in front of the cabin and asking to let him in .I honestly don’t know what go do anymore .
My cat loves being with me, can’t wait till I wake up- nothing to do with food- as I keep food down for her. Sometimes she just sits very close to me and looks at me. Sometimes it’s a paw laid on my arm- with that pleading look in her eyes. Sometimes it a soft chirp if she notices me stir in the morning in bed. Loves lying in the hall- and I have to carefully manuover around a puddle of fur.
You see, she’s almost 15. At the end of her life. And as cats get old, they like us need comfort and love. I can guess her seritonin levels have dropped as she ages much like a humans, which makes her &humans more anxious. Its why we as humans get more conservative as we get older. Holding onto the ways of the old ways calms us. Cats- well they just express this by wanting comfort. And I gladly give it too in spades. I know her time with me is limited – and my heart is going to be broken big time- so I pet and talk to her- hoping to store a memory bank that will help me when she does pass on. She has been a great comfort to me – I have Autism, and tolerating her clingy behaviour is the least I can do.
We have a rescue cat since May and settling him in was hard work. He loves hugs and cuddles but out of the blue cab lash out. i lost track of the bites i got walking past or sitting on my knee and all of a sudden biting my arm. thankfully this behaviour has stopped but he is very clingy. he wants up on your shoulder all the time and gets grumpy when you put him down. he also has only 1 working eye which dosent seem to annoy him or give him any pain. I don’t like chastising him as i don’t know what life he had before us and maybe he’s worried that we will leave him.
I have 4 cats living in my house but the oldest of these four actually belongs to my mother-in-law. He’s 15 and only comes to me for attention when she’s not around.
The oldest out of the 3 cats that belong to me is very demanding and she always has been. She’s a headstrong big girl who was well taken care of before she was given to the pet store (she did not come from a kitty mill, she was born at a farm from two very strong and well cared for parents and the family responsibly bred these cats specifically so the area pet stores wouldn’t buy from mills). She’s going to be 10 soon and I’ve noticed that she seems to be even clingier and more demanding than before. I wonder if it’s her age? I take her to the vet regularly and they haven’t found a reason for her behavior. We moved into a new house a couple months ago but she didn’t exhibit this behavior until this past week, she cries for me when I take my daughter to school and wanders around the house searching for me while meowing with her toy mice in her mouth. When I come home, she’ll drop them at my feet and then let out this long, cranky meow like “Where have you been?!” Maybe she’s just getting old and she’s becoming insecure around the three others.
My middle one is a rescue, she is 8 years old, and she is actually anxious and has been diagnosed by a vet as having anxiety and she’s on anxiety medications. I have to wrap her in a blanket and let her nurse on my clothes. She was dumped out of a moving vehicle when she was just a month old and a witness behind the car pulled over and he and his passenger raced to grab some of the cats that fell out of the box so they wouldn’t get hurt. Because of what happened to her, she is very needy and insecure. Other cats scare her and she has panic attacks. I have to be very patient with her because her panic attacks happen at random.
Finally my youngest who is 1 was a kitty I took in from a feral colony that lived in the parking lot of my former apartment complex. Her mother abandoned her when she was 3 weeks old. I knew of the feral mom and had helped her care for her kittens by providing food and water to her. She was a young cat mom and the kittens were actually fathered by her father. He sired most of the cats in the colony, actually. The apartment didn’t do anything about them and just let them run around and mate with each other until there were genetic issues due to incest. My kitten fortunately doesn’t have those issues, but I took her in when her mother abandoned her due to her bacterial lung infection. She isn’t very clingy even though I took her in when she was 3 weeks old. She does see me as Mommy and she licks my face constantly, but she’s pretty independent. She’s not clingy and doesn’t demand my attention. Actually, she barely meows.
So why am I here? While I feel it’s reasonable to want some space from an animal living in your home, there is something about Smoke that feels unreasonable, like the partner that wants your undivided attention, or else. That’s not normal, and it’s not normal behavior for an animal either, especially a cat. I wish I knew what to do about it, because a cat like this has issues.
My roommate’s cat is ridiculously clingy when my roommate is gone. When I grab her to get her off of me she clings her little claws into my arm/legs nd then digs them in upon me attempting to move her. She has made me bleed many times for trying to get her off of me. My roommate is home fairly regularly and she gets plenty of attention.
I tried flicking water on her to see if she’ll get off me scratch free- but instead she just takes the water like it’s no big deal.
My two rescues are normally affectionate, the orange tabby (Chester) is usually my sidekick and the siamese/ragdoll (Charlie) dotes non-stop on my autistic teenage son.
The past few weeks Charlie has uncharacteristically been laying or sitting on me *constantly*!, my son and I have both been very confused at his change in behavior so I’ve been keeping a close eye on him and giving him extra cuddles.
Fast forward to today, I went to the walk-in medical clinic for a recent blurry vision problem that I thought maybe due to allergies. By the time I left they had found blood in my urine, suspect kidney disease and hypothyroid. I just came back from bloodwork and nervously awaiting results to see what the next steps will be.
I think our fur babies are far more astute than we give them credit for!
My 5 month old Savannah-Bengal is very demanding. He meows at me for sometimes up to 20 minutes when I get home and in the morning. He will go into other rooms and meow fervently until I go see what he is meowing about (usually nothing). Part of his meowing issue may have to do with him not being neutered yet (he’s scheduled for that in a couple weeks) and that on his primary care taker. My husband and kids mention that when I’m not home he doesn’t make a sound. Also, he has a sensitive stomach/digestive issues and navigating the food situation may make him meow when his stomach is upset.
Thank you. My cat for some reason is wanting more attention from me. But now I know she is so demanding. Wanting your spot on the couch. Calling dips for your warm lap. Crying when she wants to get fed. Wants to lay down only when she wants to lay down. She is a Siamease so most of that would explain it but she was just really obsessed with me lately.
Hello I have been put in charge of 15 cats as the old owner could not take care of them anymore . All of them were strays when she picked them up and took them home . They are all in good health thanks to her . But it seems each has needs that are hard for me to a dress all by my self . I am trying to do my best for them and find forever homes for each . I’m not really into cats but I could not let something bad happen to them .
I have never really even owned a cat but my dog loves cats and she has brought plenty home for me to feed, vet etc till we found them homes . All of them were so much easier .varry independent…. I would feed them clean litter pans give them flea meds fix them and they never really wanted to be petted to much . But these guys and girls want hands on all the time . And one licks herself bald in spots as well as the others and watch out because she will lick you too .Oh she also don’t want the others near me.She will fight them at the thought of them getting close to me . I have put her in my room away from the others so noone gets hurt . They all so bad when I walk outside to do something around the yard or to get the mail they all get up and must must must walk with me even if they were sound asleep when I got up . I feel like the pied piper . It’s funny . How can they be so attached after only a month of being here ?How can I make more time for each of there needs ? I’ve only describe a few things but each has little problems that need to be worked on .
My mail rescue is was two affectionate she hugs my arm rolls on his back downstairs when I come down to get to me wants kisses hugs if not screams
My cat ran away a year go.Since. she has been back. She has be glued to my side. I kind of baby her when she.came home. She was gone for three.weeks I know something.really scarey. Happen how do I help.het feel.safe with out.being glued to me
I think she’s more demanding because she always has to jump to us first and she has to be the first to get up on the chair when I’m going to eat or she looks for my hand to rub her all the time doesn’t matter if I’m sleeping or playing in my ps4 but she always has to b on top oh and when she’s hungry she start meowing and going up and down
I have a comment for miss Ellie’s owner your cat looks like my cat blanket I live in Florida I lived in a rental house for a year when I had her and her sister socks but we bought property just down the next street ,I tried for months to get blanket use to the new place but she kept going back to the other house she grew up at and had her 1st litter the people there said they would keep her but I was really surprised to see her on here I know my blanket and when she was pregnant she had them right on my lap on the couch even when I tried putting her in a quiet place she wouldn’t have it ,she is a wonderful cat take care I miss you
I had my at for 3 years since my eldest cat died after 16 wonderful yrs with us my cat of 3 yrs had become very clingy lol she sleeps on my chest very annoying when I’m trying to pay bills online. lol don’t knw why her brother cat dose love cuddles but isn’t clingy. I saved them from my ex friend she was skinny and riddles with fleas her brother was stronger but the same fleas. they are very healthy now but since my male cat died she wont leave me alone I love her so much but I have things to do. iv had falls thanks to her getting under my feet.
I had two cats, both with different temprements. One sat on we all the time, the other just hissed or spat (a ‘if I want stroking I will come to you’ cat)
I lost the lap cat a year ago and since then the other cat has become really clingy, sits on my knee all the time, in fact as soon as I sit down on the sofa he is there.
Is it because he misses his brother?
Hello,
I have three cats. Rooies (my ginger 11yr old, had him since he was born), Cleo (my rescued 1 and a half yr old tortoise shell) and Mystic (she is Cleo’s one baby, she is 5months and pitch black)
Each of them have their own personalities. Rooies is obviously the man of the house. Very demanding, talkative, clever, and can have a very bad temper if things don’t go his way. He loves exploring and to sleep in your arms or inside the cupboard or couch, actually any where he won’t get disturbed.
Cleo was a friendly thankful little Kitty, but lately, since I let her outside again after 4 months of being inside with her baby (I was a bit over protective, lol. I only let her out for about 10min a day), she now only comes home if she is hungry. We live near a big field and the river is also nearby. So they have loads of space to play and explore. She also runs away from me and ignores me.
And then there is Mystic. Like I mentioned, she never went outside for about 4 months. Till one day I forced myself to get over this over protectiveness and opened up so she can come and go as she pleases. She is also very demanding and very clingy. I can’t do anything or go anywhere without her following me. She is also very talkative. I can’t close a door and lock her out, she will sit and moan outside that door untill I come out. When I do my make up or hair or bath or wash dishes, anything, she is either against me or on me. She goes outside, but just for a while then she runs fast back inside and meaow’s until she spots me. Then she will purr really load and rub against me. She knows my workibg hours as well. She will wait for me and when I get home, she will talk and talk and roll on the ground. Her tail is the best part of her, lol. It is completely up towarsa her head revealing her butt. She love biting my feet.
And that is my story. I have so much to tell. I can’t imagine life without my babies.
Thanks for your info on our little feline babies..
Anell
Can they be both? Ours is in your face and needs you near to eat sometimes. He was rescued and has been with us around 4 years
I currently have 4 cats Kiki was rescued from a shelter after she was turned over from her previous owners, Momma is a rescue I found her staving with a kitten and pregnant again. I kept her original kitten Flash and one (Dak) from the litter she was pregnant with and thankfully the rest were adopted into loving families. Flash use to be my loving cat and would cuddle nonstop, while Dak only wanted to be touched on his terms. Now Dak has been more demanding with attention to the point to where he is jealous of me paying attention to any other other animal or human for that matter, and Flash is now more reclusive even when he has my undivided attention. I’m wondering why the change in behavior on both sides and why Dak has become so demanding.
I’m not sure what category my cat falls in, he is almost overwhelming! I rescued him and bottle fed him so I’m def mom to him, but he has to be so close to me especially when I’m sleeping I’ve woke up a couple time feeling like he’s suffocating me. To the point I’ve moved to the couch and he’s right next to me with his head on my pillow!
Well I have a rescue, who’s been acting horny now, since this surgery he had to removed a long thread, from his small intestines,as the thread had perforated through them. This is like his 3rd time,at deaths door.
His unique behavior must in some way,be coming on due to this time away, and recovery. He was neutered at around 7 months. He was a stray, his name is Wally..So yeah,he had surgery in March. He never exhibited any of this type of affection, prior to it? All of the sudden one day,a couple months, after he healed up,he just started pawing, like when a kitten is tryin to get milk. Then he was meowing,& adamant that I not move.It was Crazy! I wasn’t sure what was going on.Long story short. It made an appearance,& he gets easily excited.😄 He is a lover by nature,I mean he was always loving, but this is just weird. My kids & I just can’t figure out why? He never did this Wiggly, hump mission before? 😖
My nephew woke up one morning and threw my car aspen outside and I looked and looked for her than the next day she was under the lawn mower and now she does me everywhere , she used to follow my mom and So get around but she follows me to the kitchen the living room and she even sleeps either in front of me or behind me what does this mean please help …
I ment cat
It couldn’t be easier. Give a cat a playmate. i.e another cat. The more playful his/her playmate is the better for the cat. For those who say cat is a solitary animal is either dumb or never had a cat. My cat is extremely clingy, when he’s alone. If another cat comes in. he’ll jump to play with another cat. And comeback when he’s tired. So get another cat or you’ll be the OTHER CAT.
My cat midnight , I hand raised him since he was 2 weeks old .the people who game me him took him from his mother to early, but I got him neutered and since then he became clingy to me . He wants to have me hold him a lot or climbs on my side and lay down. I don’t know how to handle this situation with him.
I love him and I know I’m all he knows to love him and care for him , but is there anything I can do.
I swear mine has got even worse now. About 6 months ago we let him lie on the bed and he always lay on the foot of the bed, gradually he moved higher and higher and now he is on the pillow between us. When im in the kitchen hes always rubbing against my legs, If im at the bathroom sick he is sitting latched to my leg. When we leave the room and even if hes “sleeping” he will get up and follow us to the other room.
If you TRULY love your Feline, you will NOT care if they follow you around… They give so much from their Beautiful hearts and only ask us to Love them. If you are NOT capable of loving them then DONT bring them into your house. They DESERVE Love and not the stupid ignorant human belief system that they are “clingy” That is ONLY a human being dumping their OWN insecurities onto an innocent Animal… How destructive that is. WAKE up and OWN your OWN crap and do NOT impose YOUR baggage Onto these exquisite creatures…
I’m not going to give you the whole big rant about my experience with my cat being clingy. but just because a person questions clinginess does not mean they are dismissing the cats love. I loved my cat and I know she loved me, but her clinginess wasn’t normal behavior. questioning, or at least examining, the reason is not a bad thing. it is better to be safe than sorry.
My kitten faced death recently she was anrmic from fleas also a stray nursed her to health now she wont leave my side and sleeps on my chest every night even woke me up at 7 am
If I had a companion that loved me like that, I would NEVER leave them… you obviously do NOT value LOVE… for you criticize and belittle it when it Wakes you up at 7am… oh how terrible to be woken up at 7 am by a loving beautiful animal… WAKE UP… Get a life and HONOR the Love that this exquisite creature brings you and NOT dismiss it…
I have a male kitten who is aggressively affectionate. No matter how much I try to get him to stop he keeps coming and he’s still needing at 4months. I jus want to know why he like that and how to slow that down or stop the aggressive part of it.
My cat has become vocal in the last 2 weeks again. She’s 15 years old and up to a year or so is when the CH manifested itself. Seems like she goes in spurts. She has also tends to potty in the corner of the room when she has this behavior. When I scold her about her behavior she stops using the corner but continues to howl. She knows when she does something wrong because she’ll see me looking at her potty corner and immediately goes under the bed. She will come out a little later and slowly make her way over to me. If I make eye contact she will retreat to under the bed again. During this time she’ll wake me up extra early to eat and now during ranfom times during the night for some lovin but otherwise when she’s not doing this howling she meows very softly to wake me up and uses her litter box again. She’s always by my side and if I leave the room she comes looking for me and vocalizes that she wants me to come back. I swear there were a few times when she actually said I love you. Every other week I’m home on a 5 day stretch and she does not like it that I go back to work or leave the house
I think she’s resentful so she kind of punishes me. I’ll soon be moving to a new place and I’m just dreading what she’s going to do when she gets there. The new place has been renovated and I’m not sure if there ever was another cat there so I’m afraid she just may “mark” her territory do her howling to let me know she’s not comfortable there and I won’t be able to watch her 24/7. Any suggestions? I already use a room warmer that is supposed to calm her when I’m not around. It doesn’t seem to work and I have been looking for a spray deterrent maybe help her stay away from at least the corners and edges of the rooms. I have to say this behavior is making me anxious. When I take her to the vet they say she’s okay just put out more litter boxes and her hauling is just a form of talking to me. I have done the litter box thing but that doesn’t work when she gets into that mood.HELP!
You do NOT deserve to have a cat in your life if you seriously believe that a cat can be “punishing” How stupid that human beings constantly impose their OWN crap and emotional baggage into an INNOCENT Animal… ????? Cats are NOT capable of “punishing” behaviour … it is ONLY human beings that are like that… you reveal your own desire to punish by scolding this exquisite creature who needs your HELP and NOT your ignorant negativity… WAKE up… and Treat your Cat with Love and RESPECT.. and do NOT impose YOUR crap onto this beautiful Animal.. Animals Offer ONLY unconditional LOVE and NOTHING else.. so that says an awful lot about YOU… and your OWN crap… Deal with it… and find another home for your Cat this is actually LOVING and KIND… it is NOT with you…!!!!!!
Ok, so I’ve had my cat since the day he was born, and he’s nearly 11 now. He’s never been dependent or clingy. He normally meows for food, and then wants to be let outside for a little bit. Lately (maybe a few days,) he’s been really clingy. He wants to go everywhere with me. If I leave a room, he has to follow. When I go to the rest room, he sits outside the door and cries because he wants in, and when I lay down for bed, he comes and has to cuddle up on my chest, which makes it a little uncomfortable for me to sleep sometimes. This is really odd behavior for him, and I’m a little worried because he isn’t ever like this. He’s been hospitalized twice for kidney failure, but even then he would hide from us. What should I do? I love him to death but I’m a little worried
basing off my own experience with this… you may want to take him to the vet so they can check him out for kidney problems. it might turn out to be nothing, but its better to be safe. if you want to know more, let me know.
My cat was never clingy to me, since a incident that happened to me a few days that followed me going to the hospital and what not. She has never left my side. She always sleeps with me now cause she never use to do it, nor have she liked to be around me. And now I’m curious does she know something I don’t ? Or does she just feel the need that I need comfort and support,
If you LISTEN to your Feline companion, they will tell you what they need and they will do all they can to Love you… How Amazing in this ????? and how ignorant and stupid human beings are… to dismiss such love and call it “clingy”… They are a precious GIFT from the Divine… and we do NOT appreciate them… they will NOT stay… and we are the ones who lose…. more than any human being will understand…
My cat is very needy, clingy and can be vocal at times when not at ease. I found out when I had to get my cat on a plane, I needed a letter of verification that she was healthy enough to fly. Reason being the requirements of the burmese or cross burmese get more stressed. Apparently they are more highly strung and emotional then other breeds of cats. My cat follows me around like a dog and has been vocal and protective for me against my ex when I had been verbally abused in the past. She is 17 and will leave a big hole in me when she passes on. All you can do is love them more, the more you give them – the they give you.

I rescued my cat from the great outdoors
’14 10 27, she was aged the next day
’17 10 28 at three [3] months by a veterinarian
[Side note: Veterinarian Dr. Hack who became
Soldier’s regular vet.], approximately $500.xx later, [Soldier needed an X Ray of her belly, but that’s another summary.] and I took her home.
Soldier came into my life so unexpectedly, however just when I most needed to fill an empty void. [The ‘hollow’ within.]
I love her sooooooo much, I can’t imagine my life without her. She’s taken over the household
[I just pay the bills. LOL], on that note
my cat is NOT clingy, she’s > demanding.
[I’m a stay at home cat Mom, LOL again.]
She’s ALWAYS on my legs or my chest while she sleeps. She follows me everywhere even into the bathroom.
Sometimes it can be annoying, I think to myself: I can sure use a break!
But than I think about my life between the dates ’11 12 01 and ’14 10 27
and know just how fortunate I am to have her.
I love her so much: I just can’t imagine my life without her and that horrible nightmare
[Profound mental, verbal and emotional abuse that defies description.] I suffered between the dates ’11 12 01 and ’14 10 27.

In retrospect, Soldier rescued me.
My clingy dependent rescue cat is always by me.
This year we plan to go to Florida for a month. I can have someone come in to feed him but how will he survive without me??? I’m worried sick!!!
Any advice would be appreciated.
Binks is very clingy. She is 3, severe CH and a non-walker. She wasn’t always like this. We lost her BFF, (Bailey also a severe CHer) to cancer in August 2015. After he passed, she became very insecure and needed mom more than ever. She may not be able to walk, but she climbs like a monkey, onto the bed, even up and down the stairs to get to me. I have actually invested in a couple of cat carriers so that I can “wear” her when she is especially nerdy. Her favorite is the hoodie with the pouch in front. She has mom and mom has free hands. I am rewarded with the sweetest little butterfly kisses on the planet.
I just recently found a kitten (think it’s 6 weeks old, but I’ll find out tomorrow at the vet). Every second that I’ve been home since, it’s always laying on me. As I type this, it’s laying on my shoulder and purring nonstop. I’m pretty sure it falls under the category of “mommy issues” and it sees me as it’s mother/protector.
I am a 32 year old male. I have two female cats. I have them trained to pee outside, stay off the bed, and most of the time keep out of the bedroom.. but that ones been tough. Even with consistency my more dominant one really likes to sleep on the clean clothes pile. Haha.. yeah I’m kinda messy. They also cower to loud noise so it’s very easy to dominate the cats. Mine are indeed very submissive. I do have a a positive relationship with my two. Their names are Killer and Misty. I call them Kii-poo and Mitty-mew. They know they are loved but they also understand when I don’t want to be bothered, and not to take offense. I still show the affection, even if I shoo them out of my personal space.
My cat pepper is my oldest in had her first an ever since she was little she would be by my side all the time in bed or anywhere. I actually like I love her so much but I have other 3 boy another girl there all rescues but patch is like a loan wolf he’s by himself an he comes to me an meows cause he wants attention an I give an he cries when I give him food too. He just now attacked pepper while she was on my lap an I’m trying to figure out why. My youngest boy mimzie attacks her a lot an I don’t know why but everytime I go an pick her up an tell her it’s okay I’m here. Mimzie is the big baby of the bunch but then he does that to her an I don’t like it I give him attention too he’s my big bubby.
After reading the article..I see my cat is demanding. She smothers me all the time. I love her dearly but I’d love it if I could sometimes sit on the couch and relax. But she races me to the couch and waits till I am sitting so she can get on me. Wants to stretch out line she’s hugging me.
Just wish I could find a happy medium
Tammy my cat never leaves me alone. She like a dog. Cooking shes around me. Going to the loo shes siting out side. Cannot sit down without her sitting on my lap. If i go up to bedroam. She comes. Always try and get under my arms when on lap. Is ther anythink wrong with her. Thankyou
My brother and his partner lived next door to my parents, and had four cats. His partner died and, to cut a long story short, moved in with my parents, but they weren’t able to take in the cats other than to feed them outside the house, and the cats had no shelter other than some boxes left out for then and an opened outside toilet. Anyway, after four months, they managed to find homes for three of them, leaving a nine-year-old (spayed) female ginger, which I, having already had two male gingers in the past but since died, said I’d take in.
After a few days of getting used to her surroundings – I live on my own – she started to feel comfortable sitting on my lap. Great, I thought. She’s feeling secure! She’s got twenty-four hour access to outside via a catflap (which she had in her former home) though hardly goes out except to do her business, gets plenty of food and treats (chicken, tuna, cooked meat, etc), loves being stroked under her chin, but insists on sitting on my lap WHENEVER I sit down. An example in, watching TV on evening, I lifted her off to go and fetch a glass, placed her on the cushion next to me, but before I could even stand up, she turned round and went back on my lap! Talk about needy! She lies on my side or chest when I go to bed, thoroughly kneading the quilt for a good ten minutes before settling down, and even now is sitting on my lap as I type this! Try to lift her off and she hangs limp in my hands, lol! She’ll even try to sit on guests’ laps when I have visitors!
I figure she’s imprinted on me like a baby duck, having given her a home, but it sure is annoying at times when I can’t sit down to eat without her looking pleadingly at me and mewing for permission to jump up! I suppose I should just be content to consider myself as an obedient servant to my feline overlord!
I don’t have a CH cat but she is a rescue at a young age of 1 wk old. Her mom abandoned her , she’s 6 months old going on 7 months and anytime I’m in a room with the door shut even for 5 mins she yells and when I come out she demands that she needs to be held like she hasn’t seen me in days or hours. Is there any way I can attempt to make her feel more safe or whatever she needs
My cat is very clingy. She will meow when outside until I let her in. Then she will look at mums recliner and no matter what I try to do I can’t get her attention. It’s like she’s focused on something. After a while she will sit on my lap and that’s where she stays until I take her outside. This is an everyday thing
I just had my cat spayed last week. She 4. Ever since she’s clinging to me. She keepbputting her forehead to my mouth for kisses and suddenly has to sleep beside me under the covers. Is she ok? She’s always been a physically fragile girl since I raised her without her mama since day 1
Since I had my operation my cat sleeps next to me all night and day and wants to be on my knee she has never been this clingy
My cat is very clingy…she, wants to be picked up by me or my bf….she talks quit a bit…lately she runs in her litter box and tears out of it making a mess. It’s crazy HELP!
I adopted a stray kitten and kept her inside to heal, eat, and get better since she was in pretty rough shape. When she was a better, I had her sleep outside. I felt bad having her be out there so I slept in a tent so if anything happened I could help her asap. When I awoke she was soaking wet and, instead of being with my other cats, waiting as close to the tent as she could be. Why didn’t she get out of the rain or sleep with the other cats? Is it just because she felt her home was temporary?
Hi! I know this is an old post but why I am responding now is because of what happened with my cat. He was always friendly and willing to snuggle anytime but also was independent. For about four days he was extremely clingy and would go from room to room meowing to get in. Of course we all would open doors and welcome him. He would get his fill of coddling then leave only to return crying to get back in or go to another bedroom. This was not normal as he would go to sleep with us and stay the entire night until we woke up. The last night he did this I let him out of our room and he did not return. Both my husband and I left for work in the morning and neither of us took much notice that our cat was not there. I received a call from my husband when I was at work and he said I needed to come home because Arnie, our beautiful long haired, big, goofy orange taby was sick and could not walk. The vet confirmed Saddle Thrombus and he lived only 3 more days. This was the most horrific thing I ever encountered owning a pet and I am so sad and depressed. He had an enlarged heart and that is what caused this. We only recently found out about his heart and did not even have time to get him on meds. That weird clingy behavior is something I think about constantly. I miss my 3 year old baby boy.
Just a few days ago I lost my cat of 18 years! Now the other 3 cats, who normally don’t show much interest in me, won’t leave me alone. I’m not complaining, but just curious. Are they consoling my loss? It’s really quite strange to me and curious if I should be concerned?
My mom is elderly and found Jasper we already had Teddy a Pomeranian older dog, but we felt sorry for Jasper so decided to take him in .He’s very needy carries on like you wouldn’t believe, he’s always in trouble the two get along pretty good . Thank you
I got this new kitten she is about a year old give or take I love her to death she is a great kitten but I can’t leave the room she is in she will sit and meow til I return I have never had a cat that done this she sleeps with me and she sits with me has to be under my feet all the time she was bottle fed and then given to a friend of mine then she couldn’t take care of her anymore so I took her I learned she hasn’t had any shots or anything so I took her to my vet and then home a couple days later now she is all up in my business she don’t jump in my lap but she will lay right under me the closer the better she thinks lol I don’t have a problem with her other then I can’t leave a room without her
I read your article and I do believe you pin pointed the problem. Yesterday I put a new bed down for her and removed her old blanket.
Today she only wants to sit on my lap and sleep, now what?
Pris
My cat cannot get enough of me. I rescued her as a baby and she’s been underneath me ever since. For the past 9 years she has followed me everywhere and literally sleeps on top of me (My stomach is her favorite spot) at bedtime. Thanks for writing this article. I now feel special instead of annoyed.
Hi I have a one year old Persian who is small and hardy ever meows but she is always at the back of my chair when I sit down and washes my hair. Will this harm her I am retired so she is never alone and if I get out of my seat she jumps into it or she will cuddle my ankles if she is on the floor.I have been told I have spoilt her but I don’t think so. Shes my baby do you think she is ok
I don’t know if my cat is clingy or maybe learning to become demanding. He was so quiet, yet extremely affectionate when I rescued him a year and half ago. Then he started meowing at times, when water or food was low. He once alerted me to a slow leak I wouldn’t have otherwise noticed for quite some time. Since the leak he has slowly started to meow more, sometimes in a cute little short higher pitch, to low down long deep meow. I am his person no doubt. He does get a little jealous of my daughter, but he just stares at me. Then give a small grunt and wander off usually in my bed (yes I let him sleep with me). But lately to her bed. Does he want to be part of the lengthy tuck in talks we have? Or trying to make me jealous by going to her bed instead of mine? He is extremely affectionate and getting even more affectionate, and maybe it’s demanding because he’s learning I listen to him, but part of me wonders if this new found vocal and affectionate behavior is an indicator that something is wrong. He eats great (but only if the entire bottom of his bowl is unexposed. Her will eat straight down the middle and reveal the bottom of the bowl with food crowded up the side of the bowl (plenty to spare) and if there is even a peek of the bottom he tells me. I work a lot so I know he misses me, but when I’m home without my daughter he follows me from room to room (especially the bathroom). He is always in the same room as me and no matter the task sits and watches me (even now as I write this now). At night he waits until I’m asleep, or thinks I’m asleep and carefully climbs upon my ankles and circles around ever so gently for what feels like forever until he lays on top (when I’m on my side). If I’m on my stomach and fall asleep I normally wake to him creeping onto my back, or already there (freaks me out when I have a nightmare). If I’m on my back, especially the couch he’s right on my chest. I can’t tell if he’s clingy or demanding. Is it possible to be both? Could there be something wrong with him that makes him more vocal and more affectionate than I thought possible? He’s been affectionate since the day we met. Seconds after meeting he rolled right over and showed me his cute furry belly and nuzzled into me. I’ve always had a slight to severe allergic reaction to cats (which I was willing to take medication if the allergy was slight and tested his allergen level before I adopted him) and I have zero reaction to him. Is he my soulmate trapped in a cat’s body? Kidding aside. I love Symon even with his constant staring. He may knead my favorite blankets and leave long fur all over my, well, everything, but he’s worth it. But is he demanding or clingy? I don’t know.
Clingy doesn’t even describe my cat, omg, all over me all the time, he is 16 pounds, a big boy in bed at night is the worst lays on my head then pulls my hair from the scalp with his teeth, purring all the time, in the kitchen, doesn’t shut up, I do love him, but sometimes it makes me crazy. I have decided to lock him out of my bedroom at night, to many times he wakes me. But he has a sister so he is not alone. He is 10 now, I adopted him when he was 3, when I brought him home and took him out of the box he kissed me. I said you are such a sweetiepie so that is his name, Sweetiepie, I adopted a sister for him a few months later, when I brought her home, I said look sweetiepie mommy brought you a baby sister. So of course her name is Baby.
Found a cat outside, the poor thing was sick as can be and malnourished. My aunt found him before I did and had his fleas, ear mites and worms treated and then I took him foor and water and played with him for about half an hour a day, sometimes more. I wanted to take him home so badly. I wanted him to be healthy and live a good life. Yesterday, I got a surprise. My aunt got him all his shots and neutered him. He’s laying behind me as I type this, being such a sweetheart. His temperament from the moment I met him was very sweet and loving. He’s been stuck to me a bit like glue since he came yesterday but I can completely understand. He almost died from his afflictions after all. Not only that but he had an owner that wanted him after we found him but got sick of him in 5 days!!! So now he is here, still a little sick because of his antibiotics for his ear infection, but he is already lots better. I hope his flea bites will heal soon. ❤
Oh, and I named him Bright because the moment I saw him, My gloomy mood went away and my day was much brighter.
I see you’re talking about kittens my cat is 9 years old. He likes staying under me but for a few days now he’s really been under me.
My 11 ye old tabby has recently become very very clingy. I can’t just sit in a chair in the evening or make a phone call without him trying to jump on my shoulders, my arms, my laptop or just read a newspaper!
He’s got much more clingy since losing his litter mate earlier in the year but it’s been over 6 moths now. Could it be anything else?
Regards
I cant seem to a way from her for any reason
Older cats sometimes get clingy because they are cold and want warmth. I found my 10 yo cat settled down once I bought her an electric blanket. Clingy cats become less clingy if you are at home full time. I got made redundant and being at home totally changed his clingy behaviour. He could find me at all times. I also bought him a friend and he is learning how to play. He was terrified of toys but now I play with them both together he is fine with them.
He still gets startled sometimes but if I say it’s alright in a calm reassuring voice he settles well. There is actually a lot of psychology involved in rearing cats I’m reading some comments and I’m thinking that some people shouldn’t really have them if they are not prepared to put in some work in understanding how cats “tick” May the meow be with you all.
I have 2 cats both rescues. I had Charlotte first and you have clarified that she is demanding. I’m actually thankful that she is not needy after reading your article. Natasha is passive and very well adjusted but hides from visitors, I don’t get many. She plays fetch, plays by herself and is the perfect cat. Natasha can take a lot of Charlotte’s shit before she lets her have it. 😝lucky for Charlotte Bc she out weighs her by 4 lbs. Natasha is my beautiful Queen. Charlotte follows me literally EVERYWHERE 😒 jumps from piece to piece of furniture to let me know she is here. In the sink when I want to brush my teeth. Crawls up the kitchen drawer handles like a ladder bc she knows she’s not supposed to be on the counter 😒 it goes on and on 😡
One of our cats Suddenly started being clingy. She loves up to us. She actually talks to us. While in bed she sits on our chest, hugs up to our face purring. If we take her off us she returns over and over. She demands our food and attention. I ask my husband if he was dying or the cat. The cat then started sitting on me.
I adopted my cat a year ago they told me he was not a lap cat he does not like to rubbed every time I sit down now he is jumping in my lap is he sick or have change when I try to rub him he would try to bite me now he does it but not as much
Hello ,suddenly my cat will not leave my side, he always wants to be in my bedroom when in there he will lay on my legs.
Head bumping is one of the most distinctive ways for cats to express themselves. If cats bump you with their head, it often just means they are trying to tell you that they love you.
I taught my cat whom is 1 yr old the word NO. If I have fed her and cleaned her litter and have toys out and she still meows and stares at me and I tell her no 2 or 3 times, she is so funny, she just looks at me and walks away
Hi, my name is H. Phoenix III. I would like to know exactly what category to put my 8 month kitten in! She is clingy and demanding. Her mom is here also along with a few of her brothers. They are all fixed now along side of their 5 dog family friends. Well anyway my little fuzzy friend tries to answer me when I talk to her. She has even called my mom using my iphone! This cat was born in the guess room this pass 4/29. She likes all of the foods that I eat but won’t touch her cat food! She talks to me when I go near her then climbs up my clothes for me to hold her then wants to take a nap in my arms as if I am not busy!
I have an indoor cat, Reign. Reign is 19 months old, we’ve had her for 15 months. She is an indoor cat, there are a lot of feral cats in our neighborhood and we do not let her out. At 10 months we had her spade @ fully vaccinated , she recovered fine. Last week, my little granddaughter accidentally let her out, we looked all over and couldn’t find her and hours later heard her crying and she was two doors down up an 80 ft tree. We tried for hours to coax her down but she did not know how to come down. It was very cold, snowed that night and she was still up there crying, we called everyone we could think of including Animal Rescue…( Who were very rude and told me if she wants down she’ll come down.) I told her she had never climbed a tree, did NOT know how to get down and wasn’t up there because she wanted to be, she was freezing cold, hungry, and thirsty. They again said she was fine and to leave her there. Desperate, it dawned on me to hire a tree trimmer, which I did, and he finally got her down. (He was even angry at the animal rescue.) She was fine , ate , drank, and slept for several hours but now follows me everywhere, howls when I’m in the bathroom, wraps herself around my ankles and lies on my neck or chest when I’m sitting. I don’t know what to do, I love on her, talk to her, cuddle her, she is till clingy.
