Cat Parents Create Helmets For Their Special Needs Felines

August 8, 2013

It was bound to happen, but honestly, I was still surprised when it did: Cat parents have stepped up and created helmets that their special needs cats can wear to protect them from the inevitable bumps, crashes, and tumbles.

Within 24 hours, I saw folks post on Facebook about two very different types of helmets that they’ve created for their felines, and the community went wild.

helmets

The first was a crocheted helmet (center, right) created by Françoise for her CH kitty, Lucas.

Françoise’s helmet is a variation of a baby’s crocheted hat. By making a few modifications, like adding holes for the ears, it quickly changed from a cute baby hat to a practical safety device.

Meanwhile, Jennifer made a helmet for her cat, Handicat, out of a tennis ball and some foam (left). She said when Handicat was younger she had a soft spot on her head, so the helmet helped protect it.

Interestingly, the cat parents said while there was an adjustment period, both cats got used to wearing the helmets.

I absolutely love that cat parents are getting creative and are finding solutions to help their cats.

Do you think your cat needs a helmet? Have you tried creating a helmet for your cat in the past? Do you think you’ll make one now? Please share in the comments!

This post is so funny to us as we were jokingly talking about making a helmet for our kit Molly.. I had gotten a package that was wrapped in “bubble wrap” and I was seriously thinking about making a helmet/body wrap for our kit..

I think those helmets are a GREAT idea, and I congratulate and applaud the cat parents who thought up the idea.

Do you happen to have more detailed information on how either of these helmets were made? My cat is blind and has been bumping into things since I moved.

      Hi Dana,
I’m sorry for the delayed response. No, I don’t have more information, but you may be able to find more by doing searches online. Good luck!

great ideas! Our cat likes to get into bad battles with the neighbor cat and is always getting his head beat up! Time for a tennis ball helmet!

The same problem. My last cat died losing his eye in such a battle. I’m thinking of sime kind of goggles or plastic screen, like police forces have.

I have a CHcat with epilepsy and has some balance issues. He likes to go outside but we have concrete out there. Sometimes he’ll fall over and bang his head. I’m going to ask my crocheting friend to make me one for my Goliath. He needs the padding more on the sides than on top.

I’m more interested in police-type clear plastic helmet, so other cat wouldn’t be able to catch it wit it’s claws.

The first one looks like part of a tennis ball glued to a stretchy hat, you could use a newborn hat and line it with a softer molded or carved styrofoam. Maybe use a foam ball cut in half??? Racking my brain for ideas…….will now be walking through the dollar store, walmart, and craft store looking for ideas

Is there anyone out there who makes these to sell? I have 2 CH kitties that need head protection.

Sheriann, you can buy pet helmets on Amazon. They don’t have ear holes, but they would do a really good job!

Yes! I definitely need a helmet for my cat! He is about 8 months old and suffered a TBI at around 4 months. He’s a special little character. He frequently goes into bursts of energy flying around the room like a crazy kitten only he has neurological problems and very limited sight. I’m so scared he will hurt himself despite all the precautions I take. He needs a helmet for sure! I don’t know how to crochet though and would probably need to have a light layer of additional padding on the inside. I would love to find someone who could make me one. I’ll pay of course. Is there anyway you could help me get in contact with the woman who made the crocheted one? Please and thank you 🙂

Yes, I need to make a helmet for my moderate->>>severe CH kitten. I like the green helmet to the far right side. Can anyone provide a crochet pattern? I’m trying to make a helmet myself but if someone has a pattern I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

I made a hat for our CH cat, Wonky. I put extra padding at the back of his head. It has holes for his ears and secures under his neck with Velcro. He doesn’t mind wearing it at all!
